The Rt Hon Dominic Grieve KC delivers the 2025-2026 Mitchell Lecture
EVENT DETAILS:
On 17th March, the Europa Institute was delighted to host Dominic Grieve, who delivered this year’s Mitchell Lecture to a sold-out Playfair Library. The Mitchell Lecture is named for the founder of the Europa Institute and first holder of the Salvesen Chair of European Institutions, Professor JDB Mitchell. In 2028, the Europa Institute will celebrate its 60th birthday.
Mr Grieve’s lecture was introduced by Niamh Nic Shuibhne (Professor of EU Law and Co-Director of the Europa Institute) and chaired by Professor Sir David Edward (Institute Chair). The current holder of the Salvesen Chair, Professor Jo Shaw (also Head of the Edinburgh Law School) offered a formal vote of thanks and Institute Co-Director, Chad Damro (Professor of European Politics), led informal thanks and the presentation of a gift to Mr Grieve at the post-lecture dinner.
Special guests for the evening included Professor JDB Mitchell’s daughters, Kate Mitchell and Elizabeth Walsh; former Europa Institute administrator, Margaret Ainslie; and Institute ‘emeriti’, Professor Drew Scott and Dr Robert Lane.
The full text of Mr Grieve’s lecture, on the acutely timely topic of “Dead or Alive? What future for the international rules-based system and Britain’s place in it?”, can be found here. His talk generated both deep appreciation and a lively round of questions from the floor.
